The HWAF and 412 core barrels are spe¬cifically designed for use with air-flush, having a relatively large annulus between the inner and outer tube. WF and airflush barrels can be used with plastic “Coreliner” tubes with an undersized bit and a corelifter, to obtain an instantly “packaged” core.

This simple but rugged core barrel is popular in site investigations. The tubulars are thicker than the equivalent metric series (T2 or T6) core barrels and thus less prone to damage when handling on site. However, the larger kerf area results in a relatively lower rate of penetration.

These core barrels are used in conjunction with face-discharge bits, which minimize core erosion in soft, unconsolidated formations. The barrels can be used with water, mud or foam flush.
