WHAT IS HOLLOW STEM AUGER DRILLING?
Used for both environmental and geotechnical applications, hollow stem auger (HSA) drilling is a proven and relatively cost-effective drilling technique.
Commonly implemented for soil and groundwater sampling, installation of monitoring wells and data collection instruments, along with subsurface improvements, HSA drilling employs flighted tubing (augers), and a rotating cutter head in order to advance through formations. Various cutter heads can be used based on varying geologies.
The hollow stem acts as a temporary casing, keeping bore holes from caving and allowing for environmental sample collection free from outside contamination.
Augers can be equipped with geotechnical samplers and continuous coring samplers.
